Newsletter August 2007

General Notes

Congratulations to Richard Flockart on bringing home four silver and one bronze from the recent Victorian Short Course Championships.  I believe Richard was also part of a relay team that achieved a state record.

We will be going to the Vikings Town Centre Club for drinks after training on Sunday 2 September, to celebrate David Mortlock’s 80th birthday.  David and his wife, Jill, are life members of our club, now living in Queensland, and they will be in Canberra that weekend.  I think David’s birthday is actually on the 7th, but what’s a few days in four score years?

Our AGM will be held on Monday 24 September.  A separate notification will be sent out regarding this important event in our club calendar, but you might like to start thinking now about what you could do to assist with the running of the club.  We need a new treasurer, a new merchandising officer and a new club captain.  In short, the treasurer looks after the $$ and cc, the merchandising officer organizes orders for club shirts and swimmers, and the club captain organizes relay teams at meets.

Our next meat raffle will be at Erindale on Friday 5 October.  Volunteers are required.

Upcoming Meets

The NSW short course championships will be held at the Tuggeranong pool 20-21 October.  Our club has been asked to provide some prizes for the raffle.  During September there will be a basket at training sessions for raffle donations.  Suitable items would be something tasty, something to drink or something useful for a swimmer, but it doesn’t have to be expensive.  This meet is a good opportunity for our members to attend a state championship without having to go away for the weekend.

Another NSW meet that people might be interested in is at Toronto on 29 September, which is a long weekend.  Details can be found at http://www.aussimastswimnsw.org.au under “Calendar”.  Jeanette will need entries for this meet by Sunday 2 September.  Entries can be handed to Jeanette at the pool, or e-mailed to her at sheather@hfpps.cg.catholic.edu.au

Our own annual swim meet, The Vikings Challenge, is booked for 17 November at the Tuggeranong pool.  Last year we had to cancel it for lack of support, so do consider entering this year.  It’s a “different” sort of meet, one in which the slowest swimmer can be the winner.  It involves only three swims  -  50m, 100m, 200m  -  each in a different stroke; you nominate the stroke you wish to swim for each event, and you nominate your expected time.  The winner is the one going closest to their nominated aggregated time.  There will also be a novelty event, and handicap relays (entry optional for these two). If you still feel that you can’t do it, perhaps you could help as a volunteer.  Please contact Ann at ann.reid@westnet.com.au  if you would like to help.

Report from Brenda on the Kiama Invitational Meet

Nine of our Mighty Viking swimmers made the journey to the Illawarra Coast for the Kiama Invitational Meet on 4 August.  A good time was  had by all with our swimmers breaking many club records, as well as a NSW State Record tumbling with Adrian Davis taking out the 25m breastroke.

Tuggeranong was 4th overall with 212 points, and 9th on average with 23.56 points per swimmer.

Age group placings saw Ann Reid swimming a 3rd, 2nd and 1st.

Liz Needham a 2nd, 1st and 2nd.

Gillian Laughton a 6th, 5th and 5th.

Brenda Day a 2nd 1st and 3rd

Jane Lindsay a 2nd and 1st

Bruce Laughton a 2nd and 3rd

Steve Walker a 2nd and 1st

Adrian Davis three 1sts

Ian Hampton a 2nd and 2 1sts

We "rocked"!  Kiama and the surrounding area is most picturesque and a great excuse for a weekend away. I do hope that next year we are able to get an even larger group of Vikings to attend this meet.

Postal Swims

The Baddaginnie Animal runs until the end of September.  This one is a real challenge.  In one day you have to swim 800FR, 200BR, 200BA, 200BU and 400IM.

The Murrumbidgee Monster Medley is an even bigger challenge.  This is a 2Km individual medley, ie 500m of each stroke, in medley order.  This one runs until the end of August.  Four of our members have already completed this swim:  Adrian, Ann, Brenda and Lily.

If you want to enter either of these swims, just come along to one of our aerobic sessions (see below).

There will be more postal swims in September and October, including a half-hour swim organized by one of the New Zealand clubs.  If you enter this one, you will be killing two birds with one stone  -  the postal swim, plus aerobic participation and points for our club, so start getting into shape for this one now.
