Well winter is here and it’s becoming harder and harder to leave the warmth of our homes in the evenings – especially for those mid week training sessions. But remember you always feel better afterwards!!!!
As some may know, sadly Yuruy has been unable to continue training us during winter due to his other work commitments. We are, however, lucky enough to have Ian Hampton who has readily stepped in to fill the gap. Ian’s specialty is breaststroke so any of you that are looking to improve that most frustrating of strokes, come along on Tuesday night and Ian will gladly give you some pointers.
UPCOMING MEETS
At our last committee meeting we scheduled the Tuggeranong Challenge for 4 November and we will also host the ACT Long Distance meet on 9 September, keep those dates free.
The NSW Relay meet will be held At SOPAC on 23rd of July a number of people have expressed an interesting in the club entering some teams, if you are interested please put your name on the sheet on the board at the pool .
There are also a number of postal swims happening at the moment the Bunbury swim is once again taking place (see below) and details of the Badaginnie Animal meet will be on the board soon.
For those looking for a real winter break attached is a brochure for an open water swim meet in Fiji in August – sounds very inviting to me! Check it out at www.beachcomberfiji.com.
AEROBIC SWIMS 2005 (thanks to Jane Lindsay)
The 2005 edition of the annual aerobic swim publication is now available on the national website. Out of 80 clubs participating in the programme last year, Tuggeranong came 27th.. This was a very good effort considering that most of the group did not start their aerobic swims until July.
AEROBIC SWIM GROUP
April was a very quiet month on the aerobic swim scene, which is hardly surprising given all the other activities in April - Nationals, Easter and school holidays – but there were some significant achievements. Andrea swam her first ever 800m BU (using an 800m BA as the warm-up!), Ann swam her first ever 400M BU, followed three days later by her first 800m BU. Ann also set out to beat Adrian in the insanity stakes by swimming 800m BA, half hour FR (1725m), 800m IM and 800 BR back-to-back, and then, just a week later, swimming the 800m BU immediately before Sunday night training. Watch your back, Adrian!
Of course, you don’t have to be insane - or even competetive - to do aerobic swims. The main purpose of the programme is to encourage swimmers to maintain and improve their aerobic fitness. Liz Liliee has decided that she doesn’t care about maximising her points. She uses the aerobic sessions to enjoy long, relaxed swims, concentrate on technique, and improve her aerobic fitness. This approach works very well for some of us, and there is still a valuable contribution to the club’s total points.
An Excel spreadsheet showing everyone’s aerobic swims for 2006 is now accessible on the club’s website: http://www.aussi-vikings.org/ Follow the “Aerobic Swims” link. This spreadsheet includes all 400m and 800m times swum by our members at the Nationals, regardless of whether they are regular aerobic swimmers or not. It also includes a page for this year’s Bunbury swims.
Is everyone happy with the current arrangements for aerobic swims? We will soon be making our pool bookings for the second half of the year, and they will be, as far as possible, the first and third Tuesdays and Saturdays of each month except December, so if anyone has suggestions for changes to these dates, please contact Jane Lindsay on 6281 3764 before the end of May.
Aerobic swim sessions for May/June will be as follows:
Tuesday 16 May, 10.30 – 12 noon
Saturday 20 May, 2-4pm
Tuesday check with Jane Lindsay
Saturday 3 June, 2-4pm
Come and swim with us in hired lanes, have some fun, improve your aerobic fitness. You just need to be able to swim 400m, and you don’t have to go fast. You can even stop for a break if you wish - but you can’t go for a cup of tea during your break!
Swimmers are asked to contribute $1 each to help defray the cost of hiring lanes.
BUNBURY WINTER POSTAL SWIM
This popular postal swim is on again this year. It involves swimming just three 400m events some time during May and June, and they can be swum on separate days. The events are freestyle, backstroke and either breaststroke or butterfly. Freestyle and backstroke are compulsory, but the choice is yours for the third swim. Certificates are awarded to all participants. The entry fee is $10 per swimmer, to be paid to Jane Lindsay by Sunday 9 July.
Tuggeranong has performed well in this competition in the past, with three of our members currently holding “best ever” times in their age groups, and we have contributed the highest number of participants on at least two occasions. Once again, the emphasis is on participation, so come along and enjoy some winter fitness, and help to put the club on the map.
People are welcome to attend our aerobic sessions to do their Bunbury swims, and time will be set aside in some of our regular coaching sessions for those who are unable to swim at other times. In addition, over the next few weeks a number of swimmers will be going to the Sunday training session an hour early (5.00pm) to do their Bunbury swims – all are invited to join them.
SOCIAL EVENTS
Many club members went across to Queanbeyan for a joint training session a few weeks ago and stayed around for BBQ afterwards, to reciprocate we have invited Canberra Nth to attend our Sunday night session on May 28th after which we will head to the club for a drink or dinner if you wish . Please put the date in your calendar. Other suggestions of social event for the near future are a ten pin bowling night and a Christmas in July evening, further details will be advised . We are always happy to hear of suggestions for social events and of course offers of assistance to run them, so if you have anything in mind let a Committee member know.
MERCHANDISE
Orders have gone in for the Parkas and Club swimmers - they should arrive soon.
CALL FOR HELP
The Tuggernong Vikings Swim Club (kids club) has sent the following message, ACT Swiming has helped us a lot in the past so if you have some spare team you might like to offer your assistance.
Dear swimming colleagues
As most of you would be aware, the Tuggeranong Vikings Swim Club is hosting its annual Qualifying meet on Saturday afternoon 27 May and Sunday 28 May at the AIS. I have been given the task of finding officials for this meet.
While we have been able to fill a number of spots from within out own ranks, there are still a number of positions we need help with - hence this email.
If you are able to help with any of the following positions, on either day, please advise me. For your help, in return we will provide you with hot and cold drinkSs and lots of yummy food throughout the meet. Free entry as well, of course.
So, the official positions we need help with are:
referees
stroke and turn judges
starters
chief recorder
AOE operators

Leanne Hoctor
