Newsletter September 2007

 General Notes

Once again Tuggeranong was the club with the highest number of entries in the Bunbury postal swim. We managed 14 entries, and Geraldton was second with ten entries. Three of our members came first in their age groups - Liz, Adrian and Greg - and four improved on their times: Suzie, Mandy, Ann and Adrian. Congratulations to these people, and thankyou to everyone who participated.

Our next meat raffle will be at Erindale on Friday 5 October. Volunteers are required. Please contact Ann at ann.reid@westnet.com.au if you are able to help.

Technical Training

Gary Stutsel, NSW Technical Director, will be in Canberra on the weekend of 17-18 November, and he has offered to run a training course for “judge of turns”. Anyone who is an accredited timekeeper may attend this course, but they must be prepared to go to a few meets over the following six months in order to get some practice under supervision and complete their log sheets. Gary is away at the moment, so anyone who is interested in this course should contact Di Coxon Ellis at msnsw@aussimastswimnsw.org.au

Annual General Meeting

Just a reminder that our AGM will be held at the Tuggeranong Vikings Town Centre Club on Monday 24 September, starting at 7.30pm, followed by dinner (optional).

Upcoming Meets

The NSW short course championships will be held at the Tuggeranong pool 20-21 October - see flyer attached separately. We would like to see a good turnout for this meet. Entries close next Wednesday, 19 September. Please e-mail your entry to Jeanette at sheather@hfpps.cg.catholic.edu.au Payment can be made later in the week.

Our own annual swim meet, The Vikings Challenge, is booked for 17 November at the Tuggeranong pool. Last year we had to cancel it for lack of support, so do consider entering this year. It’s a “different” sort of meet, one in which the slowest swimmer can be the winner. It involves only three swims - 50m, 100m, 200m - each in a different stroke. You nominate the stroke you wish to swim for each event, and you nominate your expected time. The winner is the one going closest to their nominated aggregated time. There will also be a novelty event, and handicap relays (entry optional for these two). If you still feel that you can’t do it, perhaps you could help as a volunteer. Please contact Ann at ann.reid@westnet.com.au if you would like to help.

Postal Swims

The Aqua Jets Taskmaster runs through September and October. This involves up to four long swims, in any stroke, or all in different strokes: 800m, 1500m, half hour, one hour. Full details are on our notice board at the pool.

In October there will be a half-hour swim organized by one of the New Zealand clubs. If you enter this one, you will be killing two birds with one stone - the postal swim, plus aerobic participation and points for our club, so start getting into shape for this one now.

If you want to enter either of these swims, just come along to one of our aerobic sessions (see below). One half-hour swim can be used for both of these postal events, as well as the aerobics programme - that’s three results for one swim.
