Challenge
The Tuggeranong Challenge went of very successfully on the weekend and a good time seemed to be had by all.
Congratulations to Mandy Sheen who won the overall challenge, proving definitively (as we all suspect) that training really doesn’t help.
Individual events 1- 3 were won by Rod Bransgrove, Mandy Sheen and Katrina Hicks respectively. However, Rod acknowledged that his strategy in handicap events was a little suss and as a consequence obligingly shared his winnings with us all at training on Sunday night.
Special mention for the day goes to Jenny Moore who swam a total of 47seconds faster than her nominated time over the 3 events.
Ann Reid outlasted everyone to win the 50m Freestyle handicap event and the Lane One team of Jane Lindsay, Ray Knight Carmen Carlon, Mandy Coggins and Bevil Purnell headed of all challenges to win the Relay. Ray was particularly proud of his final butterfly leg in holding of all the faster finishing lanes.
It was great to see Yuriy compete in his first club event. It was also somewhat reassuring to the rest of when Katrina pointed out at the end of his 200m that:
‘You didn’t dolphin kick out of the turn, you breathed off the first stroke and your stroke rating increased during the 3rd lap”
Still 27 sec for 50 fly from somebody who doesn’t train isn’t bad!!
A big thanks to all those who helped organise the meet and particularly to those non-swimmers who just came along to assist. Special mention to Emma, Kit and Sandi Sharman who did a great job helping out all afternoon.
Other Meets
In other competition news, three club swimmers recently returned from the Masters Games held in Adelaide. Gillian and Bruce also went over to help officiate.
“Swimming was held at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre over Friday 7th October to Sunday 9th October. With gale force artic winds producing temperatures similar to Canberra winter, Brenda, Oneeka and Chanele were blown into the safety of the indoor aquatic centre.
Brenda swam the 200 Fly (Gold), 400 I.M. (Bronze), 200 Free (4th), 200 I.M. (5th), 400 Free (4th), 200 Back (5th). Several big p.b's - with my husband Jeff (who competed in the sailing in Adelaide) asking if she was on drugs - with an 18 second p.b. in the 200 Backstroke - I think having Gillian Laughton standing on deck right next to my lane may have spurred me on - thank you Gillian. Despite the less than perfect weather in Adelaide, the swimming was terrific - very competitive and good fun but have I told you how much I hate 4th place (ha, ha).
Oneeka swum the 200 breaststroke (Gold) , 200 freestyle (Gold), 50m breaststroke (Bronze), 400m free (Gold) and 100m breaststroke (Bronze) and swum some PBs.
Chanele spent the week being “reminded of life back before it was necessary to act responsibly” but still managed to swim 5 events including winning a Bronze in the 200m breaststroke.
On Sunday four swimmers of dubious intelligence (including me) are heading off to Mt Annan to compete in the NSW long distance championships. Events being contested include such gems as the 1500m and 800m Butterfly, 1500m breaststroke and 800m IM. Depending on the outcome you may or may no hear how we go in the next newsletter.
